You Received an IRS letter. Why You Need a Professional

If you get a letter from the IRS, there are many choices.  What choice is best for you?  That depends on the situation and you.

If the demand is small like $150, give them what they want.  It’s not worth the stress.  If it is an audit or a large debt, then the question becomes why you need a professional.  Let’s explore that.

What can I, as a professional, do that you can’t do?

·         I know the law.

·         I know what the IRS can and cannot do.

·         I am a disinterested third party so I can be calm and objective.

·         When I call the IRS, I generally talk to more experienced and competent representatives.

o   Competency comes with experience.

·         I know all the steps involved in resolution.

·         I know what to say and how to say it.

Most importantly.  I know what NOT to say!

A few points to remember:

·         The IRS is NOT your friend.

·         The IRS is the most effective collection agency in the world.

·         Their primary mission is to collect as many tax dollars as possible at the lowest level.

·         To that end, they have incredible power to garnish wages, seize assets and in some cases incarcerate taxpayers.

·         They have a long history of using strong armed intimidation tactics. Everybody has a story of someone they knew who lost a home or savings, etcetera.

One final thought:  If you would never go to court without a lawyer, and you shouldn’t, you should NEVER talk to the IRS without a licensed professional.
